Title: Lap Wave Desk
Inspiration: Ocean/Wave glass sculptures and The Great Wave off Kanagawa print by Hokusai
Difference from typical furniture: A typical lap desk is formal looking, just metal and a plain one colour platform. I wanted something that's less traditional and more sculpture base, one that looks like an art piece and might benefit some users with the wave patterns as holders.
Function: It's a lap desk! Those computer desks are portable and you can put them on your lap to hold your laptop on. Others might use it as a standing desk by putting it on top of a regular table
Intended Location: Homes and maybe a less traditional office
Intended Audience: Students, office workers, people who need to do work standing or work portable
Here are the renders for my lap desk, I made two versions of it. One in an Oak material, one in transparent plastic with a slight blue colour just to make sure it would appear in the render. I made the decision of the transparent one because I'm going to do a laser-cut stacked together for the physical scale model.
The decisions for the wave are also inspired by personal experience. As seen in previous blogs with my moldboard inspiration, lap desks are always seen as flat surfaces with a book stopper. However, the book stopper doesn't actually do much in stopping things that will roll like erasers, pencils, glue sticks, etc. So in this render I wanted to display how a pencil would fit into the wave curves so it wouldn't roll off in every direction, it would only slide off if you tip the lap desk too far to the sides.
The next step is to design the layout for the laser-cut design. I took a peek at the supplies available from the ThingTank and there are some pieces that are the same depth so I'll probably cut into those. Currently, there are two versions of the layout, we will see how well everything will work when I laser cut the acrylic pieces.
Erica! This worked out amazing. You really captured the wave and it looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting idea. I was wondering about why it was wavy like that - but when you explained your reasoning it makes perfect sense to me. Great job.
ReplyDeleteMarket this as: 'a little bit of beach while you work.' I would totally buy this! The renders also do a great job of selling the purpose of your furniture.
ReplyDeleteErica, I appreciate your clear and concise explanation about your design. When I first saw the renders of your laptop desk, I didn't know how you were going to make it. But then I saw you in the Thing Tank stacking many laser cut sections together for your scale model. I think this is a great solution for assembling your design! I noticed the acrylic pieces you cut looked quite bendy when you pressed down on them like tweezers. If the model was full size, do you think it would hold the weight of various objects? Could a few small and discrete supports between the wave and the base add more strength to the design and prevent it from snapping? I look forward to seeing your finished model! I like the clear acrylic material you chose because it makes your laptop desk look like a wave :)
ReplyDeleteThis piece would be very functional for students on the go like us! I cant wait to see the completed piece in real life, especially with how you end up putting it together!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for functionality! At first I was thinking I'd like to see some optional add ons. Like an attachable dish to put small things in like an eraser or a drink holder or something. But I also really like the simplicity of the design as is. It is functional and aesthetically pleasing. :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it would work pretty well. And it looks cooler than most lap desk, which like you said are rather plain. If you were to make a full scale version would you add some sort of surface to it so that it wouldn't slide off your lap or so the computer wouldn't slide off it the lap desk was tilted? It might just be that it looks like it's sliding off the guy in the render. Though you could probably adjust the waves to do that too. Nice work
ReplyDeleteI want one, this looks super functional and well executed!
ReplyDeleteI love your clean and simple design. It is really functional and easy to use. Since I used computer a lot and even sometimes I don't have a table but I still need to work on my computer, I think your design is really useful for now. This is a piece can be sold in real life. Really appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteI like your application of various curves, it constructs an item combination.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your design, we need this kind of designer chair at anywhere! It will be very useful! Great concept👌!
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! I love ocean so much and how it is glowing!
ReplyDeleteI like the unique shape of this laptop desk. If there is an anti-slip pad on the wall, it will be very useful. It is an item that can be conveniently carried anywhere.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a gofundme for this yet because I would love to get my hands on one of these! The colour, the shape, it all seems so well put together! Great job!
